Ferdo Kovačević (Zagreb, April 10, 1870 – Zagreb, September 1, 1927) is a renowned Croatian landscape painter. He finished Crafts school in Zagreb, then, supported by a scholarship, he enrolled in the painting program at the Arts and Crafts school in Vienna in 1893. Shortly after returning from a month-long training in Italy, he returned to his hometown Zagreb where, in 1894, he exhibited together with Vladimir Bukovac at the Croatian National Art Exhibition. In Bukovac's circle, he participated in the beginnings of the Croatian visual modern – the founding of the Society of Croatian Artists in 1897 and at the Croatian Salon in 1898. From 1905, he was employed as a professor at the Crafts School in Zagreb, and later also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts (1917-1927). Kovačević, along with M. Cl. Crnčić, stood out within the Croatian modern as an excellent landscape painter, predominantly painting melancholic landscapes inspired by the Zagreb banks of the Sava River. The motives of the Sava landscape, permeated with lyrical colors, are present in the artist's earlier period, in the first decade of the 20th century.
