This painting, with its subtle symbols of Mediterranean relaxation, a balance of fragile gestures and glaze paint application, is a direct testament to Rončević's refined painterly matter and sensitive fabric. In a word, this is a certified image of the creative personality of one of the most prominent colorists of the contemporary Croatian art scene, whom his fellow artists bestowed the flattering title of "aristocratic painter". Rončević began his cycle of paintings "Signs" in 1987 and - with occasional interruptions - developed them until the late 90s, when they were gradually replaced by the cycles "Fingerprint", "Fears" and "Sounds". Paraphrasing Vinko Srhoj, the curator and organizer of the painter's extensive retrospective exhibition held in 2014 in his native Zadar, Rončević's painting can be said to be not a contrastive postmodern type like promoters of the "New Image", but has been postmodern from the beginning of the painter's work as part of his nature opposed to the new fashion and reluctant to overstep the boundaries of painting. Rončević's "symbolism" paintings, often as complex as anagrams, do not start from reality and represent the painter's pictorial interpretation of the memory of painting, personal experiences, read books and erudition notes.
