Frano Šimunović (Dicmo, 1908 – Zagreb, 1995) was a renowned Croatian landscape artist, born in Dalmatian hinterland, whose stone formations and piles marked his art. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. During a nine-month stay in Spain, he reproduced the works of Velázquez and Goya. In the subsequent period, the influence of V. van Gogh is visible in Dalmatian landscapes. During World War II, he painted camp motifs. In the post-war period, when his most famous works were created, Šimunović returned to the motifs of his native place - terrains, fences, pieces of arable land with a muted black-brown-green color palette on canvas. In his work until the end of his life, he simplified and purified the palette, and condensed geometric elements. The oil on canvas "Kamenjar" is signed in the lower left corner. Šimunović had already begun to strive for simplicity in the monochrome brown tone of the Dalmatian karst in the center of the composition, enveloped in white. This concentration of energy in the center of the picture is characteristic of Šimunović's creation in the 1970s.
