The volume was given to the ruling prince of Romania, Charles, the future king Charles I, by Colonel Mihail Christodulo Cerchez (1839-1885), on behalf of the 4th Line Regiment (Infantry) which he commanded. Colonel Cerchez was one of the commanders who asserted themselves during the War of Independence, promoted to the rank of general after 1878. The first page of the volume contains a handwritten dedication of the military to Charles, written in black ink. The verso of the flyleaf and the title page contain Prince Charles’ cipher, printed in blue ink. The work consists of 14 chromolithographs and 410 pictures. The cover is made of red pegamoid, with a rich stylized vegetation decor. The borders are golden.
