ulje na platnu, 50 x 61 cm, signed at the bottom left, in black, "M. Veža"

Mladen Veža studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and graduated at the age of 21 in the class of V. Becić. Already during 1938, he exhibited his fresh landscapes of his native Brist at Ullrich and at the exhibition Half a Century of Croatian Art in the Meštrović home of Croatian visual artists. It was more than a good start to a long-lasting painting career that lasted more than 70 years. He brought a certain "experiential diversity" to Croatian landscape and view painting, expressed by a unique poetic vision of not only a careful observer, but also a skilled transformer of the viewed landscape into a valuable painting. His opus is a chronicle of the Croatian landscape that he created by observing and painting various forms of its appearance. Based on the variability of the landscape, he built his massive opus and confirmed himself as a painter of many moments in the time machine of Makarska Podbiokovlje or any city square that constantly changes under the imperative of time flow. The paintings offered at this auction, created over a span of almost fifteen years, clearly testify to that. The Zagreb view is the painter's homage to the old building of the National and University Library, painted in the year when it was moving to the imposing glass cube in Trnje, and the coastal one is Veža's joyful ode to the native Podbiokovlje vistas that he enjoyed painting from his own or someone else's terrace all years of his creative life.
