Marijan Trepše (Zagreb, 1897 – Zagreb, 1964) was a Croatian painter, graphic artist, and set designer, most significant in the period between the two World Wars. During his education in Prague, he adopted Sezannism, expressionism, and cubism. He was part of an informal group, the so-called Prague Quartet. In his works, he aims for flatness, cubistically deconstructs space, uses non-mimetic colours, and shadows with triangular patches. After studying in Paris, he leans towards neoclassicism and begins to firmly sculpt volumes. He depicted a bull in a lying position with oil on canvas. The animal in the center of the composition is emphasized in volume. The background – bushes of green and brown color and light blue sky, is rendered with freer brush strokes and vibrant, dazzling color.
