Saint Apostle and Evangelist John is also known as John the Theologian. He was one of the Twelve Apostles and wrote the Gospel wearing his name, three canonical letters: John I, John II, John III, and The Revelation. His main celebration is on May, 8th, then, together with the Twelve Apostles, on June, 30th, and his Assumption is celebrated on September, 26th. Saint John was the son of Salome the myrrh-bearer and Zebedee, a fisherman from Bethsaida of Galilee. His brother was Saint Jacob, another Apostle. In his Gospel, he presents himself as “the most beloved apprentice of Jesus", rather than with his real name. He was the youngest of the Twelve Apostles and very close to God. This close relation is often represented on icons rendering the Last Supper, where Saint John leans on the Saviour. He was present at the Transfiguration of Our Lord together with Peter and his brother, Jacob. Saint John was exiled on the island of Patmos by Emperor Domitianus between 90 and 95 A.D., where he had the revelation of the Book of Revelation. On the icon's background, painted in gold, is rendered Saint Apostle John, down to his waist, dressed in a phelonion made in various tones of ochre and green, beneath, and a white omophorion with black crosses. He blesses with his right hand and holds his Gospel, discretely, in his left hand. The face rendered according to the iconography (old, bald, and bearded) is modelled in tones of ochre, from dark brown to the light parts painted in light ochre. The text that designates the scene, drafted in Greek "Saint John the Theologian", is written in red.
