oil on canvas, 47 x 55 cm, 47 × 55 cm, signed bottom right, with black, "I. Țuculescu"

Although forgotten for over a decade after his first exhibition in 1938, Țuculescu's name emerges in a fantastic way after the posthumous retrospective in the spring of 1965, when the audience becomes mesmerised by his works. He was a self-taught painter, his perseverance being highly visible in the differences between his first works and those from his maturity years. After studying the works of Romanian art masters, where our cultural sparks were always present, Țuculescu focuses his attention towards the oldest and primordial visions of the Romanian people. With a penchant towards drama and restlessness, the artist found inspiration in the stylistic heritage of folklore, the way it was created by our ancestors, as well as in the rituals of celebrating life and accepting death. By repudiating "cultured painting", which he starts seeing as a neo-primitivist experience with a strong expressionist accent, and, later on, by embracing the popular and ancient folkloric art, Țuculescu actually becomes an artist increasingly involved in the contemporary landscape, managing to create an entirely cultured art, where some folkloric elements rise into the universal level. Ţuculescu's works are always provoking and succeed in breaking all patterns imposed by Romanian style schools, thanks to the special symbolism and a chromatic full of vitality, strengthened by the force of traditions and the unusual spiritual turmoil the artist goes through.
