Croatian sculptor, painter and writer Vanja Radauš (Vinkovci, 1906. – Zagreb, 1975.) studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and graduated from I. Meštrović's special program, and then he perfected his craft in Paris. He taught at the State Craft School in Zagreb and at the Zagreb Academy. He was deeply influenced by A. Rodin and A. Bourdelle. By gravitating towards the poetics of the Earth Group, he incorporated social themes into his work. He created several successful sculptural cycles – Typhus patients in which he vividly depicted war sufferings and the Panopticum Croaticum cycle based on the lyrics of A. G. Matoš and Krleža's thesis about the tragedies of Croatian historical figures. He left behind thousands of paintings and drawings. He crafted gravestones, medals, and his poetry was also published. He is recognised by his powerful, expressive sculptures and deeply emotional approach to plastic arts. Such is the attached sculpture of a female figure in bronze with energetic modeling. The heavy wrinkled clothing, rough surface, and voluminity contrast the gentle inclination of the head, giving an impression of introspection and quiet strength.
