The first Croatian trained graphic artist, as well as the first Croatian mariner, Menci Clement Crnčić (Bruck na Muri, 1865 - Zagreb, 1930) studied painting at the Academy in Vienna, and then in Munich with N. Gysis who greatly influenced the young Crnčić. Isidor Kršnjavi recognized Crnčić's talent for graphics and sent him to study in Vienna with W. Unger. Crnčić, with Čikoš Sesija, founded the precursor of today's Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. In his early works, he mainly created portraits, under the influence of the Munich realistic school. Then he began to create marines and coastal landscapes. He painted still lifes, very often fish, but also caricatures. However, a panoramic view of the sea landscape will become a constant motif of Crnčić's canvases. On a typical vertically set composition, the wrinkled sea prevails, with waves breaking on the rocky shore in the bottom left corner. In this oil, Crnčić vividly depicts the wrinkled sea with a more open color palette. Typical grayish-blue restrained shades merge to create an atmosphere of real light.
