Slavko Tomerlin (Kešinci near Đakovo, 1892 – Zagreb, 1981) was a Croatian painter about whom little has been written so far, but whose work occupies an important place in the development of Croatian visual arts. Born near Đakovo, he deeply connected with Slavonia, whose motifs inspired him for a long time. Tomerlin gained his artistic education at the Higher School for Art and Craft in Zagreb, under the mentorship of B. Čikoš Sesija and O. Iveković, and at the Academy in Prague with the help and encouragement of V. Bukovac. Tomerlin's works are characterized by impressionistic influence and a realistic style, with a light and luminous color palette visible in his cityscapes and landscapes. The artwork "View of Tomislavac (Zagreb)" from 1925 depicts a universally recognizable motif - King Tomislav Square, a key part of Zagreb's urban identity. Tomerlin's skill in portraying the play of light and shadow and meticulous details, accompanied by cheerful tones of oil on canvas, evokes a nostalgic atmosphere of the city during a time when it was experiencing intense development. This work bears witness to the artist's exceptional sensitivity to the beauty of everyday scenes and occupies an important place in his oeuvre and the history of Croatian art.
