Ivo Režek (Varaždin, 1898. - Zagreb, 1979.) was a Croatian painter and caricaturist. He began his education at the Higher School for Art and Craft in Zagreb, but had to interrupt it due to mobilization in 1916. After World War I, he completed his studies at the Art Academy in Prague under V. Bukovac, where he proved to be one of the best students. He then perfected fresco painting at the Sorbonne. He exhibited at solo and group exhibitions in Croatia and around the world. From 1947 until his retirement in 1968, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. His first model was Cézanne and the Munich school, then he approached Picasso in a cycle of layered metaphysical meaning in which female acts, bathers, and magic-realist portraits and still lifes prevailed. He often depicted motifs from his native Croatian Zagorje. A typical Režek's painting realistically depicts landscapes, portraits, and scenes from the life of the working class and rural world. He used rich tones of brown, green, and ochre and often created in a subdued color palette. The oil on canvas "From Malinska Luke" depicts a seaside landscape dominated by a scene of a serene coastal bay with recognizable traditional stone houses with red roofs and green shutters. The dynamic sky is contributed by moving clouds. Režek conveys the peaceful scene with a color palette rich in warm tones of ochre and red in architecture that contrast with the cooler blue tones of the sky and sea. The painting is signed in red color in the lower right corner.
