Menci Clement Crnčić (Bruck na Muri, 1865. – Zagreb, 1930.) was a prominent Croatian painter, graphic artist, and educator, known for his marinas, landscapes, and contribution to the development of modern Croatian graphics. He studied painting in Vienna and Munich and graphics in Vienna under the leadership of Wilhelm Unger, and throughout his career he intensively worked on portraying motifs of the sea and nature. As a co-founder of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Crnčić educated numerous generations of artists and left an indelible mark on the Croatian art scene. Crnčić's creativity is characterized by realism with an emphasis on atmosphere, light, and color, especially in sea depictions. His marinas often portray the changes in nature, from the calm high seas to dramatic stormy weather scenes. In later stages of artistic development, his works take on more subdued tones and a calmer composition, successfully conveying the emotion and character of the landscape. The painting "St. Marin" depicts a tiny island with a church dedicated to the saint of the same name, located just a couple of hundred meters off the coast of Novi Vinodolski. Under a dark sky heralding a storm, the composition is dominated by gray tones, while dusk is glimpsed behind the clouds. Although not among Crnčić's most famous works, this oil on canvas painting faithfully reflects his commitment to landscape and skill in recording the changing states of nature. The motif of the island and the coast of Novi Vinodolski fits into the recognizable atmosphere of his mature works, marked by subtler tonalities and thoughtful compositions.
