Robert Auer (Zagreb, 1873 – Zagreb, 1952) was a prominent Croatian painter and graphic artist, known for his sensual nudes, portraits, and allegorical compositions. He was educated in Zagreb, Vienna, and Munich, and his work was influenced by study trips to Paris, Italy, and the USA. Auer's life was also marked by significant pedagogical work. In Zagreb, he opened the first private art school with his wife in 1897, and later taught at the Craft school and then the Temporary Higher School for Art and Art Craft in Zagreb. He is one of the co-founders of the Society of Croatian Artists, and in 1904 he helped to establish the Croatian section "Lada", Union of Yugoslav Artists. He exhibited throughout Europe and the USA, and his works today form part of important museum and private collections. Auer's creativity is characterized by erotic studies of the female nude, numerous portraits and landscapes, as well as engagement in decorative projects, including work on the frescoes of the Church of St. Catherine in Zagreb. His works are largely characterized by the influence of Munich academism and Secession. He uses refined color and atmosphere, analyzing the female body in erotic poses and various colored illuminations. These characteristics are also visible in this nude from 1941, in which a young, naked girl directly and unashamedly captivates the observer's interest.
