The Commemorative Cross Queen Elisabeta was instituted by King Carol I in 1878 to reward the effort of women in Romanian society, sisters of charity or civilian personnel who distinguished themselves during the War of Independence. On the reverse, the central inscription "Consolation and Comfort - 1877/1878" can be seen.
