The work, first published by Constantin Dobrogeanu-Gherea (1855-1920) in 1910, sparked a wide-ranging controversy at the time. A close friend of Caragiale, he enjoyed the attention of Maiorescu and Hasdeu, who constantly opposed him. A supporter of socialist ideology, which he often advocated from radical positions, was transformed by the communist regime into a precursor of the communist movement in Romania.
