Milan Konjović was born in Sombor in 1938, where he also died in 1993. He studied in Prague, at the Academy of Fine Arts, but did not graduate. He is a painter with emphasized color and energetic strokes, expressions close to German expressionists. This landscape from 1964 has all the characteristics of Konjović's mature phase. A simplified and expressive landscape with a windlass, a crane used for extracting water from wells indicated in just a few strokes on the right side of the painting, suggest a scene from the Pannonian regions, namely Vojvodina where the painter lived. The horizontals suggest a landscape, and the whole scene seems to be painted quickly, like a caught impression of the moment. Such Pannonian landscapes, without much artistic elaboration and with emphasized expressive potential of strokes and colors, are characteristic of Milan Konjović's painting. FG
