Research information

The work was exhibited at the artist's solo exhibition "Exposition des tableaux de Stančić" in Galerie Lambert in Paris from December 5, 1969 to January 10, 1970.

Miljenko Stančić was born in Varaždin in 1926. He graduated in painting in 1951 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. A painter of finely tuned scenes that, thanks to a specific atmosphere achieved by skilled toning and sfumato effect, give the impression of surreal, dreamy, nostalgic visions. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and died in Zagreb in 1977. A very common motif of Stančić's paintings are children. This scene depicts a children's celebration in tones of red that transition into yellow and ochre. The painting creates the impression of a look back into childhood memories. Although the scene suggests play, or some kind of children's celebration, tonal uniformity contributes to a sense of all-encompassing peace. The portrayed play appears like a performance that radiates with childlike simplicity and carefreeness. A geometrically uniform composition, planes in front of which figures are formed, and masterful handling of tones are characteristic artistic procedures in the oeuvre of Miljenko Stančić, all of which can be clearly seen in this canvas.
