This gouache by Slavko Kopač (1913 - 1995) belongs to the phase of his creation that can best be compared to international informal art. From the brown base, which is textured with blotches of watercolor, a yellow part stands out tonally as the only accent of the picture. The forms are broken, on the verge of recognition and only through associations can we assume that these are two figures. We see how the artist was thrilled with prints in watercolor, that is, gouache, and how he experimented with the textures he could therefore get. The importance of this gouache, or the entire informel phase of Slavko Kopač is great. Namely, as he lived in Paris from 1948, at the very source of post-war Informel, he was influenced by the local aspirations in this existentially charged art direction, which, through the emphasized presence of painting matter, tried to point to the presence of human consciousness in the world. And with everything it implies – both feelings of despair and those of uniqueness. FG
