This is a classic still life in the classic execution of Ljubo Ivančić (1925 – 2003), a painter associated with an existentialist worldview, informal materiality, and themes that highlight the heavy poetry of everyday life. The oil painting depicts fish on a plank. The illuminated parts of the picture stand out strongly in its deep blackness - this is the very motif of the fish, which, in Ivančić's manner, are painted as if they are radiating, and the illuminated window or balcony in the left part of the picture, which seems distant from the main motive, thus creating some elementary spaciousness. The shape made of a dense mass of relief-emphasized color floats above the fish and represents Ivančić's contribution to the poetics of informel, or his search for expression in a markedly materialistic approach to the image, in emphasizing the color as a tortured body of the image. Such an approach to an everyday and usual still life motif reveals the strong signature of Ljubo Ivančić. FG
