Vanja Radauš (Vinkovci, 1906. – Zagreb, 1975.) was a Croatian sculptor, painter, and novelist. As a boy, he came into contact with blacksmiths, which left a mark on his life. He studied sculpture at the Academy in Zagreb in the class of Ivan Meštrović and after graduating he went to Paris for further training. He taught at the State Trade School in Zagreb and was also a regular professor at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. His work was influenced by Rodin and Bourdelle. He was a member of the Earth group. His sculptural work stands out in several cycles – the “Typhus” in monumental expressionistic expression of physical deformations, “Panopticum croaticum” in which he depicts the tragic destinies of Croatian historical figures. He also made a cycle of drawings inspired by the Spanish Civil War. His oeuvre thus includes sculptural, painting, graphic cycles, several collections of poems and a large number of photographs. During the Second World War, he joined the partisans and returned from the war with many works of art. He designed the coat of arms of the People's Republic of Croatia in 1947. The expressive sculpture called “Jamničarka” is typical of Radauš. It is robust in volume and has a pronounced texture. The surface is uneven, contributing to the drama. In bronze, he portrayed a proud female figure in folk costume. The sculpture exudes determination and resilience, her hands are placed on her hips, and her face has a serious expression.
