Joso Bužan (Sisak, 1873. – Zagreb, 1936.) was a Croatian painter of the first modern period, best known for paintings of rural life's themes and characters. He studied painting at the Craft School in Zagreb, and later in Vienna, as well as several Italian and German cities. He did decorations in the Department of Worship and Instruction palace in Zagreb, made commissioned portraits of famous people, genre paintings, and was also involved in photography. He exhibited at the Art Pavilion in 1903 with noticeable love towards folk motifs. Vlaho Bukovac influenced his light palette and vivid colours. The main subject in his oil on canvas painting titled "Man with a Jug" is a peasant, with the typical motif of Bužan’s paintings – folk costumes. Optimism towards life is visible in this realistically expressed painting. The singularity of the peasant can be recognized by him hugging a bottle, presumably with some alcoholic drink, there's a rosary around his hand, and a playing card on his hat. Bužan depicts joy and cheerfulness, spontaneous faces of a country man.
