Russian painter Alexis Hanzen (Odessa, 1876. - Dubrovnik, 1937.) as the grandson of esteemed landscape painter I. K. Aivazovsky, had an excellent foundation for the development of painting talent. His grandfather even gave him his first painting lessons, but before starting a professional painting career, he had to satisfy his father's wish and graduate in law. He studied painting in Munich, Berlin, and Dresden. After the October revolution, he emigrated to Croatia. He found a permanent address in Dubrovnik where he built a house and stayed until his death. During his life, he also worked as a newspaper illustrator and traveled a lot. He initiated the opening of the first art museum in Odessa. In his work, he did not approach the avant-garde but returned to the 19th century - realism and impressionism. He portrayed the Dubrovnik landscape on his canvases, predominantly the sea and the sunset. His compositions radiate simplicity and peace, they might even be called meditative. Oil on canvas is a typical example of what Hanzen did best - marina and sunset. The painting features the coast at dusk with slightly restless impressionist waves hitting the rocks. It is dominated by warm, soft shades. With subtle brush strokes, Hanzen achieves a realistic impression.
