Edo Murtić (Velika Pisanica, 1921 - Zagreb, 2005) was a Croatian painter, graphic artist, and academic. He studied painting under Ljubo Babić and Petar Dobrović, and his work was also influenced by Leo Junek. His earliest works exude left-wing political ideas, and he abandoned politically engaged painting after World War II, moving towards post-impressionist colorism creating the "Adriatic Cycle". His creativity was marked by his stay in the US and Canada in the early 1950s, where he came into contact with J. Pollock and W. De Kooning. Over the following decades, coloristic expression reached its peak in large format paintings. During the 1980s, we should mention the cycle "Eyes of Fear" in which he depicted the suffering of people in wars. At the turn of the millennium, he returned to abstraction and vivid colors. This ink, tempera and gouache on paper is signed and dated in the center at the bottom of the composition. The work is recognizably Murtić's - the composition is simple, the powerful movement is visible. Alongside the black mass, an explosion of lively lines appears - white, red, blue, and yellow - which contributes to the impression of movement and energy.
