This canvas by Edo Murtić (1921-2005) is distinguished by all the characteristics of his style. It was created in the late phase of his work, showing his experience and confidence in manipulating elements of painting. The strong basis of the composition is a black horizontal line from which two branches extend. It is enlivened by small, intensive color strokes on the left side of the painting. On one hand, this painting is a tried Murtić formula - with a dark base and coloristic highlights, which often also represent contrasts in mass and in this way achieve the balance of the painting (as the colors he used are intense and a small amount is sufficient for visual equilibrium with dominant black strokes). But, this painting is also an immediate experiment. Despite some expected compositional solutions, Murtić played with variations in his paintings, or the question of the possibility of relationships of known elements, relationships that are potentially infinite. Hence comes the confidence in his strokes, which is so evident in this painting. With practice, we can anticipate results, even if it is something considered very intuitive, like gestural abstraction. FG
