Painter Vilim Svečnjak (Zagreb, 1906. - 1993.) initially studied sculpture at the Art Academy in Zagreb, then painting, which he graduated in the class of Professor Marino Tartaglia (1933.). Immediately after graduation, he received a French scholarship for further training in Paris where he met a large number of esteemed French writers and artists. He used his one-year stay in France for travel, first to Normandy where he painted the fascinating islet Le Mont-Saint-Michel in 1934. In the mid-1930s, he was a member of the art group "Earth", a group of artists turned to social themes and engaged painting. The first phase of his painting was characterized by expressionist colorism and themes from the marginal neighborhoods of Zagreb and scenes from their rural surroundings. From the 1960s of the last century, Svečnjak established his personal visual expression in the wake of post-cezannism, in which, during a long creative age, he achieved an exceptionally rich opus of Zagorje landscapes and still lifes, as well as small-dimensioned floral bouquet paintings that the art audience unusually appreciated and gladly bought.
