The designer and painter Boris Bućan (1947 – 2023) is known for recognizing unusual details in the world that surrounds him and their associative transformation. Both on his posters and his later paintings, Bućan displayed a world strongly marked by a visual code, that is, the reshaping of the seen into other forms. Sometimes these associations were very hermetic and on the edge of abstraction, painterly puzzles that remained unfathomable. This gouache depicts a scene from a train, following his style from the late 80s and early 90s, when he began to articulate works of art with stains. On the dark and brown dominance of the gouache, figures can be glimpsed who, if we interpret the motif according to the title, are jostling somewhere in a train coupe. The genre scene from everyday life reveals Bućan's painterly impulse by which he recorded unusual moments, details and interrelationships of figures and objects. He would reduce everything to a particular morphology – in this phase it was stains, later he did portraits by transforming leaves of the monster plant, and still later he executed segments of reality with a few strong strokes. Studying the possibilities of interpreting the seen into a picture is the basis of Bućan's poetics, which can also be seen here. FG
