Erich Heckel (Döbeln, 1883 - Radolfzell, 1970) was a German painter and graphic artist who, alongside Ludwig Kirchner and Schmidt-Rottluff, was involved in the founding of the significant art association "Die Brücke" (1905). His early paintings and graphics substantially contributed to the formation and development of expressionism in Germany in the 1920s and 30s of the last century. His portfolio is dominated by nudes, clown and artist characters, and landscapes. After the Second World War, he dedicated himself intensely to painting his "Hügel" or hills that surround his house in Hemmenhofen, and the landscape around Lake Constance, where he lived from 1944. He led the painting class at the Karlsruhe Art Academy until 1955. BRP
