The Split painter with a Venetian address, Emanuel Vidović (Split, 1870 – Split, 1953), is considered a pioneer of Croatian modern art. He is known for his landscapes of Split, Solin, gloomy and autumnal Chioggia and Venice. From the 1930s, he also created still lifes with a darkened palette and with expressionistic features, then he painted the interiors of studios and churches in Split. Using the technique of gouache on paper, Vidović depicted a modest and everyday motif of a still life - fish laid on a tray. The palette is typical for Vidović, muted with earthy brown tones. Recognizably melancholic scene of intimate still life focuses more on the atmosphere and emotional tone of the scene.
