Lucian Smău attended the George Enescu Art Academy in Iasi, sculpture section, being concerned with the expression of form and the enlivening of material through his laborious practice. The artist has a strong belief in the suggestiveness of the portrait, which through this archaic process of mimicry, typical of the Mediterranean spirit, betrays the often veiled sensitivities of the human being. The figures he chooses to immortalize, most often in marble or granite, depict stylized feminine archetypes, graces and chimeras, which in certain cases he ennobles with details in gilded bronze, giving these silhouettes new meanings. The chimera as a recurring theme in modern and contemporary Romanian sculpture is also gracefully approached by Lucian Smău in the work titled "Guardian". The magical dimension embodied by this creature extracted from a phantasmagorical universe and released into tangible reality is, in fact, a concrete reference with the role of a symbolic link between the present moment and the imaginary memory of an entire civilization.
