The theme of the icon is illustrated according to the compositional scheme set out by the Byzantine art. The Cross with Jesus crucified forms the symmetry axis of the composition, symmetrically, and The Mother of God and Saint John the Evangelist are rendered standing on either side of the Cross, with a deep sorrow attitude. Above the horizontal arm of the cross, on the right and left sides, two flying angels are crying and wiping away their tears, each with a kerchief in their hands. The icon's background is golden in the upper part and brick red in the lower part, representing the wall of Jerusalem. The golden frame, decorated and with double profile, is painted in red on the edges. The expressivity of the characters' faces, the presentation of the bleeding wounds of the crucified Jesus (the blood flowing on Adam's skull lying at the base of The Cross suggesting the washing away of the original sin), the inscriptions on the icon, in old Slavonic, the initials INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of Jews) are replaced by `Tzar' of Jews, a word used in the old Slavonic for king, all these together prove the influence of Serbian painting in the performance of the icon's painting, which can be dated in the first decades of the 16th century.
