The work is part of the well-known series dedicated to the Romanian Principalities by the French artist, illustrator, and engraver, Auguste Raffet (1804-1860). Raffet accompanied the Russian diplomat and explorer Anatole de Demidoff on his travels that took the two to the territories of Moldova and Wallachia around the 1840s. The copy was printed in the Parisian workshop of Auguste Bry for the Gigaut brothers' publishing house in Paris. The view captures the panoramic image of the city of Iasi as it was seen from the terrace of the St. Petersburg hotel in the Moldovan capital.
