Research information

In the present, two similar icons are known, but newer than this one, in private collections, published in the "... Through me, Ioan Pop the Painter"), by Ioana Rusoiu, Elena Băjenaru, Ana Dumitran and Szőcs Fülöp Károly, Alba Iulia, 2008, p. 121, pos. 114 and 115.

In the centre, the Crucifixion scene is illustrated on a silver background, according to the compositional scheme established in Byzantine art. The cross with the crucified Jesus is placed symmetrically in the centre of the composition, with Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist standing on either side of the cross in an attitude of deep pain. Above the horizontal arm of the cross, to the left and right, is the inscription designating the scene: "The Crucifixion of HS". (M.B.)
