The icon presents Archangel Michael down to his waist, wearing a Roman soldier's costume, as established in icon paintings. He is taking the sword out of its scabbard, using his right hand His clothes observe the pattern, but are treated more freely: a light-ochre shirt, with a graphically-treated coat of mail. The long red mantle is draped on the left shoulder. His ample wings are painted light ochre, and the feathers are graphically highlighted in black. The hair, parted in the middle, falls in curls on the back. Around his head, a halo. (M.B.)
