The scene unfolds in front of conventional architectures, in the post-Brâncovenesc specific manner for backgrounds. The Virgin is seated in front of a richly-decorated throne, facing Archangel Gabriel, who is blessing her. At the same time, a dove (symbol of the Holy Spirit) descends on to Mary's head. The charcoal drawing is specific for post-Brâncovenesc icons in Wallachia at the end of the 18th century. (M.B.)
