"The collection of old and new poems" reflects a romantic and sensitive vision of reality, with philosophical, erotic, and especially social-humanitarian accents. The poems express concerns related to human nature and social condition, being influenced by a rationalist and enlightenment creed, close to utopian socialism. The author dreams of a world governed by reason, without privileges, with communized goods and a universal fraternity. Although he advocates for the emancipation of the peasantry and republic, he respects property, family, and religion, even though he had previously called for their abolition. A supporter of romantic messianism, he sees poetry as a fundamental spiritual act and a social mission, expression of harmony and creation.
