copper engraving, striated paper, manually colored, 50 x 70 cm

The French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) is known both for his works dedicated to Europe and especially for his atlas of North America. Employed at the court of King Louis XV of France, he first published this work in 1703 in Paris. The present copy is part of an edition published in the capital of the French kingdom in 1780, in the Dezauché printing house, under the patronage of King Louis XVI. The map includes both the historic territory of Hungary and territories that had been part of the Hungarian crown in the past. It is interesting to note that parts of Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Muntenia, as well as Crimea or the Black Sea, are also featured here. Copper engraving manually colored after printing.
