As a historical character, Transylvanian Prince Sigismund Bathory remained in the collective imaginary, first of all, thanks to his connection to Wallachian Voivode Michael the Brave. He reigned over Transylvania several times, between 1586 and 1602. From the political point of view, he fluctuated between the Ottoman and the Habsburg Empires, eventually joining the Holy League and marrying one of the nieces of Emperor Rudolf II, Maria Christina of Habsburg. In the context of his closeness to Habsburg politics, several propaganda engravings containing his portrait were imprinted, amongst which this one, executed in 1596, probably in an Austrian studio, after an original by German engraver Hans von Aachen (1552-1616).
