Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), the famous Dutch cartographer, considered to be the founder of modern cartography following the publication of his main work, "Theatrum Orbis Terarum", of which the first edition was issued in 1570. This work's success required its re-issuing in several edition, which have circulated across Europe. The current specimen is part of an edition printed in 1595. Engraving on copper, manually coloured after imprinting.
