patinated plaster, 74 x 36 x 3 cm, signed bottom right, in monogram, "Th.C.P."

Admitted to the School of Belle Arte in Bucharest, Theodora Cernat Popp studied sculpture under the guidance of Ion Jalea and Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck. She made her debut in 1916 in an exhibition organized by the Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, which included her teacher from the School of Belle Arte, Olga Greceanu and Nina Arbore. Along with them, the artist will accept more projects which involved making mural decorations. Starting with 1923, she also exhibited regularly at the Official Salons, but did not hold his first solo exhibition until 1938. Theodora Cernat Popp sculpts in bronze or patinated plaster and often deals with religious themes or myths. In her works, she focuses on reinterpretation of byzantine iconography, having as starting point the influence of her husband, the painter Sabin Popp, and the collaborations with Olga Greceanu or Nina Arbore. She sculpts in realist manner, but also takes on the characteristics of the romantics. She mainly creates reliefs or portraits and lends a classical serenity to the rendered volumes. The safety of the technique and the special aesthetic sense consecrates the artist in the history of Romanian arts.
