This pair of candlesticks attributed to August-Maximilien Delafontaine exemplify the rich symbolic vocabulary and refined bronze casting techniques that characterized elite decorative arts in 19th century France. Known for his impeccable craftsmanship and collaborations with prominent sculptors, Delafontaine brings sculptural refinement to these functional objects.
Each candlestick presents a striking composition: a crane standing atop a tortoise whilst consuming a snake, all rendered in gilded and patinated bronze with special attention to detail.
