92. View of Klek near Ogulin

1900, Đakovo - 1962, Zagreb

Estimate:
EUR 3.000 - 5.000

oil on hardboard, 95 x 163 cm, signed lower right, black, "Šestić"

Born in Đakovo, Ljudevit Šestić is one of the key figures in Croatian landscape painting of the 20th century. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb under the guidance of great masters Ljubo Babić and Oton Iveković, after which he went to further develop his skills in Paris in the late 1920s. There he embraced the tradition of French plein-air and developed a recognizable, impressionistic style that combines an academic structure with rich, shimmering light. Known for his atmospheric depictions of continental Croatia, the Adriatic coast and river banks, Šestić is appreciated for his dense, tactile brush strokes and exceptional skill in conveying the specific atmosphere of the domestic landscape. In the work Pogled na Klek kod Ogulina, Šestić masterfully records one of the most striking vistas of the Ogulin region. The foreground is dominated by the historic Molinari bridge - an elegant stone structure with several arches built in 1874 over the Dobra river - while the misty and monumental ridge of Mountain Klek rises in the background. Avoiding strict lines in favor of impressionistic, atmospheric harmony, the author skillfully balances the cold tones of the river with the warm green and ochre shades of the mountain foothills. This large format work is a perfect example of Šestić's mature creative period and represents a supreme opportunity for collectors of Croatian modern art.
