117. Portrait of a Young Woman [1948.]

1896, Gorizia - 1970, Ljubljana

Estimate:
EUR 3.000 - 5.000

oil on canvas, 54 x 49 cm, signed and dated top right, in white, "G.A. Kos, 1948."

Born in Gorica and educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Gojmir Anton Kos developed versatile mastery in portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, while as an academic professor he strongly influenced generations of artists. As a leading figure of Slovenian modernism in the early and mid-twentieth century, he painted Portrait of a Young Woman in 1948, a pivotal year in which he was named the first director of the Modern Gallery in Ljubljana. Created at the height of his creative confidence, between his two prestigious Prešeren Prizes, this work is an example of Kos' dedication to pure painting as opposed to politically imposed socialist realism of the early post-war period. Rather than depicting an idealized propaganda figure, the artist presents a deeply human and introspective portrayal of a young woman. The work displays his recognizable style, using a dense, textured brush stroke and dramatic light contrasts to shape form. Today, this portrait stands as a testament to the resilient modernist sensibilities that solidified Kos as a fundamental figure in twentieth-century Slovenian art.
