PROVENANCE

Inheritance, Hegedušić family collection.

Krsto Hegedušić (1901-1975) was a key figure in Croatian modern art, recognized for his focus on everyday life and the life of the ordinary man. After studying in Paris, Hegedušić returned to Zagreb with the intention to distance from bourgeois academic traditions. The year 1928 for him was a transitional period in which he, with his colleagues progressive artists, worked on gathering a collective focused on regional and social themes. These efforts resulted in the establishment of the "Zemlja" ("Earth") Association of Artists at the beginning of 1929, in which Hegedušić was the ideological leader, advocating for a simplified, direct visual expression dedicated to working and peasant life. The painting 'Vranjić', created during his trip along the Dalmatian coast in 1928, precisely reflects this new direction in his work. Avoiding typical idyllic scenes from the coast, Hegedušić depicts the compact houses of the fishing village through simplified, block geometric shapes and a restrained palette of colours. The figure in the foreground, dressed in a classic sailor's shirt, is a direct depiction of a local worker which vividly conveys the artist's interest in documenting the real life of ordinary people.
