34. Jesus is taken down from the Cross

1903, Bosanska Gradiška - 1991, Zagreb

Estimate:
EUR 6.000 - 9.000

oil on canvas, 95 x 65 cm, signed bottom left, in gray, "Mujadžić"

Omer Mujadžić (Bosanska Gradiška, 1903 – Zagreb, 1991) studied at the Academy in Zagreb in Ljubo Babić's class, and then honed his skills in Paris. He often paints intimate portraits, self-portraits, female nudes and still life. For a time, he was an active member of the Earth group and during this period he embraced engaged art by painting child labor, peasants, and nightlife. After the Second World War, his main artistic preoccupation was war, post-war reconstruction and construction. Mujadžić positioned the biblical motif of Christ's removal from the cross in a vertical composition with the brightest part of the painting – Christ's body – as the focus of the composition. With a muted colour scheme, the scene appears as a dramatic backdrop with selectively directed light. The contrast of light and dark intensifies the drama and seriousness of the scene, while the reduced background focuses attention on the human figures and the action itself. The work combines solid figuration with a simplified space and a restrained, almost meditative atmosphere.
