Eugen Feller was born in Zagreb in 1942. Since 1969, he has been living in Italy, in the town of Sestri Levante near Genoa. In 2000, he returned to Zagreb, where he still works today. Although he did not graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts, from the late 50s he started painting in the expression of informel along with Ivo Gattin. In the poetics of informel, the emphasis is on the very substance of color, on the abolition of the classic painterly structure of the work: not only does the painting have no representation, but also no classic composition. The insistence on the expression of matter carries with it associations of decay of values and solid footholds, on the tragedy of a man's life in the world that was felt after the Second World War. The spirit of informel was transferred to visual arts from the philosophy of existentialism. In exactly this spirit, this painting was created, as an authentic trace of its time and its worldview.
