PROVENANCE

Historical collection of sculptor Ive Jasić, Dubrovnik (friend and collaborator of Ive Dulčić).

Ivo Dulčić (1916-1975) was a monumental figure of Croatian modern art, celebrated for his pioneering and revolutionary synthesis of vibrant, gestural expressionism and sacred themes. His daring and unconventional use of bright, intense palettes completely redefined religious art in post-war Croatia, often provoking criticism from conservative circles, while at the same time winning widespread recognition from progressive art criticism. Around 1970, working between Zagreb and his native Dubrovnik, Dulčić entered a mature, incredibly self-confident phase of his career, intensely focused on light and spiritual transfiguration. This creative period was marked by a close fellowship within the Dubrovnik art community. Dulčić's close collaboration with local sculptor Ivo Jašić was particularly significant, who was a reliable assistant to him on monumental public orders, such as the massive wall mosaic Dubrovnik Variations at the Hotel Libertas. Painted in 1970, Dinner in Emmaus is a dazzling masterpiece from this groundbreaking era. As part of the devoted Easter cycle, the canvas transforms the biblical scene into a magnificent explosion of divine energy, placing Christ at the center of a brilliant, golden-yellow circle of light. By entering the prestigious private collection of Ivo Jašić, this exceptional painting remains a strong testament to Dulčić's artistic mastery and lifelong creative friendship.
