A student of the "Nicolae Grigorescu" Plastic Arts Institute of Bucharest (1949-1955), along with Ion Nicodim, Traian Brădean, Aurel Nedel, Marius Cilevici or Sabin Bălașa, the artist Piliuță will make his debut in 1956, at the Interregional Exhibition in Bucharest. Starting with this event, the artist is ever-present in the exhibitions held in the Capital city, as well as in personal exhibitions, organized on a regular basis in the country and abroad. In the area of easel painting, one of his many pursuits, the artist stands out with a rich repertoire - from still lives to landscapes, nudes, flowers or compositions with characters and animals - reflecting, one at a time, stylized realities, outlined in the realm of an equivocal figurative. He has a penchant for the casual, for the common place look of things, for natural gestures and attitudes, searching for the spontaneous lyrical vibration, which he essentializes using a parsimony of means, aiming to suggest. Performing in the real domain, the artist will be venturesome as regards the concerns of his age, using the workmanship as a means of connecting the viewer and the tumultuous contemporary events. Starting with the 50's, we may notice a prominent presence of the genre scenes illustrating social aspects of the rural life in his creation. Crossed by a veridical realism, irony and sober attitudes, the scenes will acquire anecdotical features. Motives such as the bodega, the barrelhouse, the wedding, the fiddlers or singers become, starting with this period, favourite subjects of the genre scenes. (G.M.)
