Empty spaces, or undefined landscapes that suggest a state of total emotional and content void, absence of any firm meaning, are a common motif in the late works of Vladimir Veličković (1935 - 2019). The silence of this painting is a horrifying desert that seems to have formed after a long and thorough destruction. This void is articulated by toning the white from the dark bottom part of the picture. All space is reduced to a meaningless game of light and shadow - meaningless because there are no objects that light illuminates and that cast a shadow. Darkness and light act as independent elements of this composition, independent of any logic that would connect them with reality or with recognizable experience. We are left to an unnamed horror. Several linear elements and a yellow shape, indicating some danger, maintain a threatening tension. It suggests a fenced area, a forbidden zone. The whole composition defies a clear interpretation of perception and deepens discomfort. After expressively painted symbols of human suffering and tortured human anatomies, Veličković's creativity turned to void. It may be significant that at the turn of the century his scenes emptied of the screams of figures and began to depict emptiness, all that is invalidated or destroyed. The torments of the 20th-century man have been transferred to post-apocalyptic resignation in the 21st century, which Veličković records precisely and sensitively in his late paintings. FG
