Samuel Mützner's name is strongly related to the evolution of local impressionism, the pictorial technique he mostly approaches in landscapes. In France, he acquires the preference for plen-air, light and colour in Claude Monet's workshop. After his return in the country, in 1923, he assumes the countryside life as principal thematic of his work. He raises the countryside space at the art level and captures the local colour of rural life. He will continue to create his works, alongside with his wife, painter Rodica Maniu, in the village where she inherits a small property in Olt County. He captures landscapes with hills, fields, corn heaps and focuses on the rendering of the seasons under whose seal he paints. In his work, the characters sometimes appear to be posing decoratively, while at other times they are captured at work - haying or corning - and thus any trace of the frozen atmosphere of the picture disappears. This time, however, Samuel Mützner no longer stops at a work scene in the local countryside, but instead transcribes with his short, quick, harmoniously juxtaposed strokes a fresco of the French nobility. He creates outdoors and travels through many regions which he gradually integrates into his canvases. He adjusts his light according to time of day, space and season. The white spots, emerging from the distinctiveness of dresses or shirts, betray his preference for sunny days and midday moments. Although his work abounds in landscapes dedicated to the busy streets of the Orient, to fairground scenes or markets filled with the bustle of people, in the present work, we find a distinct sequence, taken from the quiet and relaxation of the urban world. Mützner captures the moving silhouettes and hustle of the terrace, people seated at tables or strolling through nature, or waiters walking with full trays towards customers waiting to be served. Specific to his mature period, this work is a clear proof of the artistic mastery of the painter who studied in the French capital.
